A Short Glossary

On-campus employment recruiting has its own vocabulary. These are the terms this briefing uses, in plain English.

Junior-summer internship
The internship in the summer between junior and senior year of college. In most competitive fields it is the main route to a full-time offer.
On-campus recruiting (OCR)
Events and interviews that employers run through a college’s career office, usually booked on a platform such as Handshake.
Coffee chat
An informal conversation with someone at a firm. Officially it is not an interview.
Résumé drop
The employer collects résumés through the career office and runs its own interviews.
Online assessment
A test taken before any interview, such as McKinsey’s Solve game or Optiver’s online assessment.
HireVue
A one-way recorded video interview. Many banks use it for first rounds.
Superday
The final round: several interviews in one day, often held on site.
Rolling review
Applications are read as they arrive, so seats can fill before the posted deadline.
Exploding offer
An offer with conditions that pressure a student to accept early. Harvard prohibits them.
Return offer
A full-time job offer made to an intern, usually at the end of the summer.
On-cycle
Private equity’s compressed hiring of first-year banking analysts for associate jobs about two years away.
Target school
A college where a firm recruits actively, with campus events and recruiters assigned to it.
Part I The Clock

Sophomore Year Is the New Junior Year

Banks, the Big 4 and the top consulting firms now take junior-summer internship applications in the second year of college. Each cycle starts a little earlier than the last.

14–22 mo.how far ahead those fields take internship applications (our calculation)

Elite financial firms, many in quantitative trading, pay interns about $50,000 for ten weeks, and some students already hold summer-2027 offers barely a month into the school year, the Wall Street Journal reported on October 7, 2026.1 Their best-paid programs admit fewer than 1% of applicants, and final rounds are held on site, where candidates cannot lean on AI.1

Quant trading is the extreme case for pay and selectivity, not for timing. Banks, the top consulting firms and the Big 4 accounting firms open earlier, as this briefing shows. The Journal also describes the side effects: an unofficial motto of “always say you’re a junior,” students anxious about careers when “they just got here,” and selective campus clubs that act as the first gate.1

The mechanism has a name. Economists call it unraveling: when employers compete for a small pool of candidates, each gains by moving a little earlier than its rivals, so the whole market drifts earlier and hires on thinner information.2 On-campus employment recruiting has no central body to set a common date, and campus rules mostly protect a student’s time to decide, not the date recruiting starts (Part IV).

“I think it would be healthier for everyone if this all wasn’t accelerated. But I think it’s very hard to pull back.”

— David Solomon, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs · Georgetown University, September 20253

The chart below is the briefing in one picture. Each bar shows when a field took applications for a junior-summer internship, measured back from a June 1 start. Four groups now open more than a year ahead. NACE, the national association of college career offices and employers, asks employers to “attempt to limit hiring for positions more than 12 months prior to start date.”4

Section 1.1How employers recruit on campus

The junior-summer internship is the real hiring event. Harvard’s career office says employers and students “often think of this summer internship as a mutual 10 week interview that could result in a full-time offer after graduation.” Employers also place students by “the number of summers you have left” before graduation, which is why class year matters so much.19

Exhibit 2
From first coffee chat to return offer
StepWhat happens
Step 1Get on the radarInformation sessions, coffee chats and career fairs cluster in the first weeks of term. Harvard’s Finance & FinTech Fair was on September 3, 2026, the day after classes began.20
Step 2ApplyA résumé goes in through the campus platform (often Handshake; Harvard uses its own) or on the firm’s site. Some firms only collect résumés and run their own interviews, a “résumé drop.”21
Step 3Screen and testEmployers read the résumés and “select the candidates they wish to interview.”22 Many add an online test first, such as McKinsey’s Solve game, Bain’s digital assessment or the assessment that opens Optiver’s process.23,24,25
Step 4First roundOften a recorded video rather than a conversation: “Many banks use interview technology, such as HireVue, which is a one-way, pre-recorded student interview.”26
Step 5Superday“Multiple rounds of interviews over the course of a day (or a weekend).”27 At some top trading firms, such as Jane Street, the final round is in person; Optiver’s 2025–26 finals were virtual.28,25
Step 6OfferNACE says one to two weeks to decide “is common,” and that less “can constitute undue pressure.”4 Banks often set “quick-turnaround acceptance deadlines,” after which offers are revoked.3 Campus rules are in Part IV.
Step 7Internship, then the return offerThe full-time offer usually comes at the end of the summer. Offers to Wharton’s Class of 2025 peaked in August 2024, right after junior-summer internships.29
Every step before the internship now happens in the first two years of college for the early fields. The internship itself decides most full-time offers.

Banks, Boutiques and the Buy Side

Banks recruit junior-summer interns during sophomore year, and some boutiques have already opened for summer 2028. Private equity runs a second race for first-year analysts. Quant trading opens in July.

Sept 9Evercore’s summer-2028 opening, about 21 months ahead

For summer 2027, the big banks opened internship applications around January 1, 2026, about 17 months ahead. Goldman Sachs opened banking, trading and research on that day. Morgan Stanley’s banking window ran January 1 to February 15, and Bank of America’s closed March 31.7,8,9 For summer 2028, some boutiques have moved into the fall of sophomore year.

The summer-2028 cycle has begun at the boutiques; the big banks are likely to follow around January 2027. That last point is our inference from their summer-2027 openings.

Evercore opened its summer-2028 window on September 9, 2026, about 21 months ahead; its summer-2027 window had opened about 17 months ahead.6,32 Yale tells sophomores that some boutiques “may begin to accept applications as early as September/October 2026 for summer 2028.”36 Dartmouth tells its sophomores to check employer websites “as early as late 2026,” and a UT Austin finance professor says interviews now start “in November of sophomore year.”26,37

The process moves fast. “You may be asked to interview shortly after your application has been received,” Yale warns, with “a combination of live and pre-recorded interviews.”36 Grades count from the first semester: the summer-2027 postings asked for a 3.4 minimum at Morgan Stanley, 3.5 preferred at Bank of America and a 3.6 minimum at JPMorgan.8,9,31 A January application rests on three semesters of grades at most.

Sales and trading and research run on the same calendar. At the big banks they opened the same week as banking and often stayed open longer, and trading often set lower grade floors.8,31,9 Technology, operations and risk internships open later, from the summer before junior year: Bank of America’s technology internship was posted July 1, 2026, due November 7.38

Attempts to slow down have not lasted. In 2018 Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan said they would stop interviewing sophomores for junior-summer internships, which students had been accepting “roughly 15 to 16 months in advance.”40 By 2021, banks were again making offers more than a year ahead.41

The odds at this gate are long. Goldman Sachs accepted fewer than 1 in 100 internship applicants in 2026, for the third year running, and about 240,000 people applied to Bank of America for fewer than 2,000 internships.42,43 The internship is the job: “The summer internship class is our primary source of hiring into our full-time campus programs,” Bank of America says, and PJT Partners typically hires “a majority of the class” from its interns.44,45 Interns without a return offer can sometimes take a seat another intern declined, but “the window typically closes by the time school starts again.”46

Section 2.1Private equity’s second race

For most students, private equity is a second race that starts months into the first job. Buyout firms interview first-year banking analysts for associate jobs that begin about two years later, through a compressed process known as on-cycle recruiting. Its start crept earlier each year until 2025, when the banks and several firms pushed back.47,48

  6. Jul–Aug 2025Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi and Bank of America require analysts to disclose future offers.52 “For the first time in recent memory, the starting gun never fired.”53
  7. Jan 4–6, 2026On-cycle resumes. More than a dozen firms, including Blackstone, Apollo, KKR and Thoma Bravo, interview analysts about five months into their jobs, for 2027 associate roles.54 Some candidates get offers the same day.55
  8. Early Oct 2026We found no report of an on-cycle start for associate jobs beginning in 2028.
Even after the 2025 pause, a new analyst can be interviewing for a job nearly two years away within months of starting. Not every seat is filled this way: Apollo says it generally fills “less than 50%” of its class on-cycle.54

“Recruiting has crept earlier and earlier every year, and asking students to make career decisions before they truly understand their options doesn’t serve them or our industry.”

— Marc Rowan, CEO, Apollo Global Management · June 202556

Where a student starts matters. A coaching firm’s review of about 300 LinkedIn profiles found that seven of the largest buyout firms hired about half of their 2020–2025 associates from just three banks.57 Some hedge funds run their investing tracks on the banking calendar: Citadel was “Accepting applications for 2028 graduates into our internship program for the Summer of 2027” by December 2025, 18 months ahead.58

Section 2.2Quant trading: the highest pay, opened in July

0.36%of candidates made the cut for 2026 internships at Citadel and Citadel Securities, from more than 115,900 applications.59

Quant trading firms opened their summer-2027 internships in the summer before junior year, mostly in the first two weeks of July 2026, 10 to 11 months ahead. Most postings confirm the Journal’s pay figure: annual rates of $250,000 to $300,000, or roughly $4,800 to $5,800 a week.1,12,60,61,62,63 At $300,000 a year, a nine- or ten-week internship pays $52,000 to $58,000, by our arithmetic.

Review is rolling, so the first weeks matter. Jane Street typically has no deadline: “our applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We do recommend applying as soon as possible.” D. E. Shaw recommends “applying by the end of the previous calendar year.”12,64 The odds look worse than they are: many applicants “never stood a chance in the first place,” eFinancialCareers notes.65

Sources: firm postings, live or archived, as cited. Dates are when each posting first appeared on the firm’s job board or in an archived copy, so the real opening may be slightly earlier.

The test is reasoning, often in person and without AI. Jane Street’s process ends with “in-person interviews for the final stage,” and Hudson River Trading says AI use “during interviews or assessments is strictly prohibited.”28,69 Juniors come first: IMC limits internships “to students in their penultimate year of studies.” But sophomores are next. Optiver’s summer-2027 internship accepts “sophomore standing or higher,” and SIG’s Discovery program, which closes November 16, 2026, offers “a direct pathway to our Summer 2028 internship opportunities.”62,72,73

Unlike banking and consulting, the quant calendar is moving by days, not months: archived undergraduate quant postings at Citadel and Citadel Securities first appear July 18–19 in 2024, July 10–16 in 2025 and July 6–7 in 2026, by our reading of the Wayback Machine.68 Full-time pay matches the Journal’s $300,000: Jane Street and HRT both post that base for new graduates.12,69

Section 2.3Fund managers: Boston recruits in junior fall

Most asset managers recruit later than the banks. Boston’s big fund managers took summer-2027 applications in September and October 2026, about eight months ahead. Part III Consulting, Accounting & Tech

Who Else Hires Early

McKinsey, Bain and Oliver Wyman set their first summer-2027 deadline in sophomore spring. The Big 4 accounting firms are already recruiting for 2028. Tech opens in the summer before junior year.

Mar 29first summer-2027 deadline at McKinsey, Bain and Oliver Wyman

McKinsey, Bain and Oliver Wyman closed their first summer-2027 internship deadlines on March 29, 2026: the spring of sophomore year, about 14 months ahead.10,80,81 BCG’s deadline was June 2. Most other consulting firms we checked set deadlines about six months later, in September 2026.81,82,83,15

The big move came this year. A year earlier, the first deadlines for the same internship were July 17 at McKinsey, July 6 at Bain and June 23 at BCG.84 McKinsey moved intern recruiting from summer to spring, Bloomberg reported, and Bain followed. “We can’t let McKinsey do an entire cycle before us,” said Bain’s global head of talent acquisition, Ron Kermisch.85

Bain offers a choice. Students “confident that consulting is your next step” can take the spring option; others can apply by August 31.80 Summer 2028 is not posted yet: as of October 8, no MBB firm had a deadline up for today’s sophomores. McKinsey’s U.S. offices “typically have one campus application window per year,” and in March 2026 BCG said applications would be “available 4-6 weeks ahead of the deadline.”10,11 If the 2026 pattern holds, the first deadlines will fall in spring 2027. That is our inference, not an announcement.

At BCG, the test comes the day you apply: online-test invitations go out “30-90 minutes after your application is submitted,” with “48 hours to complete.” Bain’s test takes “approximately 30-40 minutes.”11,24 Interns are paid well, though far less than in quant trading: Oliver Wyman’s posting lists $2,100 a week and Analysis Group’s $2,000.86,15 Seniors without an internship have few MBB doors. BCG’s full-time deadline was July 7, Bain’s first round July 19 and McKinsey’s August 11, 2026, all before senior year began; Bain’s October 11 round is the only MBB senior-fall deadline we found.11,80,87

Section 3.1Accounting: the surprise

20 mo.lead time on the summer-2028 audit internships Deloitte, KPMG and PwC are recruiting for this fall (our calculation).5,88,89

Big 4 accounting is the surprise of this briefing. Deloitte, KPMG and PwC are recruiting this fall for summer-2028 internships, about 20 months ahead, which puts accounting with the earliest fields.5,88,89 “Peak recruitment season for internships is ~1.5 years ahead of start date,” Wake Forest’s business school tells its students.90

The path to a CPA license sets the clock. On the four-year path, Wake Forest’s calendar puts the peak in the fall of sophomore year; on the five-year master’s path, the fall of junior year.90 In 2025 the model law added a licensing route of 120 credit hours plus two years of experience.91 Massachusetts has not adopted it yet: a bill passed the state Senate 37–0 in February 2026 and sits in the House Ways and Means Committee.92

Section 3.2Technology: the summer before junior year

Big Tech opened its summer-2027 software internships between late July and mid-September 2026, eight to ten months before the start. Several of its programs for first- and second-year students have closed.13,94,95,96,97,98

Offers land in late fall and winter. MIT asks employers to give students until at least November 20, 2026 to decide, and to set no internship offer deadline more than six months before the start; Google warns that replies “can take upwards of 90+ days.”101,13 Meta “confirmed that Meta University has accepted its final class” in 2025, and the last U.S. posting we found for Google’s STEP internship for first- and second-years was for summer 2025.97,98 Some doors are open: Google’s regular internship is now “intended for students in all academic years,” and NVIDIA’s Ignite pre-internship for first- and second-years takes applications October 5 to 18, 2026.13,99

Product-management windows are short, and some are MBA-only. Google’s product-manager internship took applications for two weeks, September 22 to October 6, 2026; Microsoft accepts product-manager intern applications “during the first week of each month from August through February”; Amazon’s is for MBA students.102,94,96 Startups hire later. Smaller employers “are more likely to stretch their recruiting season later into the spring,” and by our sum of Handshake’s figures, firms with up to 100 staff post 43.5% of their internships from January to April.17 The market is tight: tech internship postings on Handshake fell 30% between January 2023 and January 2025, and entry-level roles were 4.5% of U.S. software-development postings in early 2026.17,103

Federal hiring is restricted: since an October 2025 executive order, most federal vacancies need approval from an agency’s “Strategic Hiring Committee,” and a new program for students uses “part-time student volunteers.”104 Others hire a term ahead. Nationally, nearly three-quarters of internship recruiting still happens in the fall, by our arithmetic from NACE’s figure that the spring share is “27% for interns” and rising.106 The banks, McKinsey, Bain, Oliver Wyman and the Big 4 now open applications earlier than the 12 months NACE’s guidance asks for.4

Part IV The Campus

Three Weeks In, the First Gate

Selective clubs choose members within weeks of move-in. Early programs reach first-years. Campus rules protect the time to decide an offer, not the date recruiting starts.

Sept 30when Wharton’s clubs sent every fall-2026 decision, five weeks after classes began

At many selective colleges, the first competitive application of a business career comes about three weeks after move-in, when pre-professional clubs choose their new members. Clubs offer the training and alumni contacts that recruiting rewards, so a first-semester rejection can feel like a career verdict. It is not one.

Membership buys practice, people and contact with firms. Mock interviews and shared prep materials “help to compress the learning curve,” the Daily Pennsylvanian reported, citing a Penn club member, who added that leadership roles in selective clubs “can help in recruiting because a lot of times resume screeners are Penn alumni.”113 Harvard’s HFAC finance club teaches accounting and financial modeling and runs a stock-pitch competition with Citadel.114 The preparation now starts before college: a Wharton sophomore told Business Insider of high-school students who began preparing to get into clubs as soon as they were admitted.111

Schools are pushing back. Wharton banned multi-round club interviews in 2025; clubs now get one interview of at most 30 minutes, with no résumés and no brainteasers, and any club that rejects applicants must also run a general-membership program.115,107 Georgetown requires clubs with business-school funding to offer open membership through a 15-minute form; one elite consulting club grew from about 60 members to more than 300 in fall 2023.116,112 At Penn, some administrators have proposed moving club recruiting to the spring.113

“I got rejected the first time I applied.”

— The head of the Yale Undergraduate Consulting Group, to the Yale Daily News, 2023117

Rejection is common, even among the people who later run these clubs. A Michigan Ross dean put it plainly in 2019: “student success is independent of participation in any single club or activity on campus.”118

Section 4.1The early-entry layer

Before the first real application, firms run short programs for first-years and sophomores, and several now feed straight into interviews. Many were once reserved for under-represented students: they “typically opened before standard summer internship and graduate schemes, giving diverse students preferential access to roles.”119 Since the Supreme Court’s June 2023 ruling on race in college admissions, some have opened to everyone and many others have closed.120,121,122

The shift came in steps. In March 2024 Goldman opened its Possibilities Summit for Black students to all students, and JPMorgan’s sophomore fellowship for Black students became “open to all sophomore students ‘regardless of background.’”121 By January 2025, “only 11 of the 31 diversity schemes we spotted in 2022 still exist,” eFinancialCareers found.122 In March 2025 the EEOC listed internships, “including internships labeled as ‘fellowships’ or ‘summer associate’ programs,” among areas where DEI-based treatment can be unlawful.131 In tech, the trend ran the other way: Meta University has closed, and the last U.S. STEP posting we found was for summer 2025.97,98

Section 4.2The rules colleges set

Campus rules protect a student’s time to decide, not the date recruiting starts. Harvard bans exploding offers and MIT asks for four weeks, but no school we checked bars employers from recruiting first-years.132,101 Where a student enrolls also decides how much recruiting comes to campus. Peak Frameworks, a finance-training firm, analyzed about 12,000 investment-banking analysts who graduated from 2008 to 2023. It names 15 “target” schools with “good representation at every firm,” and ranks Boston College 23rd, among the “semi-targets.”133

Early offers are expected: Dartmouth’s policy already sets a deadline for summer-2028 internship offers.137 Rules can also loosen. Michigan Ross’s 2024–25 calendar held internship offers open until November 30 and began sophomore events on February 3; the 2026–27 calendar drops that date and starts sophomore financial-services events on October 7.135

Section 4.3Boston campuses

Recruiting started within weeks of move-in at every Boston-area school we checked. Boston College has watched the clock move: “In 2018, it got moved up to sophomores,” Amy Donegan, assistant dean for undergraduate career advising, told the Carroll School’s magazine. By January 2024, it reported, “a slew of sophomores already had Summer 2025 internships lined up.”140

Northeastern runs on its own clock. Business students get their co-op schedule by the end of first year, search in the semester before each co-op, and most complete two co-ops of four or six months; the first begins “in the second year or beyond.”142 Decisions are fast: the university recommends that employers give students two business days.139

Part V How The Boardroom Fits In

Before the Clock Starts

If the 2026 calendar holds, today’s high-school juniors will face accounting and boutique-bank recruiting in the fall of 2029. The high-school summers are the last ones with no recruiting deadline attached.

Fall 2029first accounting and boutique-bank recruiting for today’s high-school juniors (our projection)

If the 2026 calendar holds, today’s high-school juniors will face their first club applications in September 2028, accounting and boutique-bank recruiting in fall 2029, and big-bank and top-consulting applications in early 2030, 14 to 17 months before their junior-summer internship. The map below projects each field’s window onto each high-school class.

For every class still in high school, the first internship applications fall about a year after arriving at college. For a decade the drift has been earlier, not later, so treat each date as the latest likely start.
Our projection from the 2026 calendar documented in Parts II to IV, for a student on a standard four-year schedule. BCG’s 2026 deadline, June 2, fell at the end of sophomore spring.

Section 5.1What families can do, and when

Prepare early, but don’t panic. The early fields reward students who arrive at college already fluent in business and aware of the calendar, yet most employers still hire within ten months of the start date.

Grades 9–11Build the base
  • Read a public company’s annual report and follow its quarterly results.
  • Take the hardest math available. Trading firms look for people “uncannily good at playing the odds,” and bank and consulting interviews test quick, accurate numbers.1
  • Learn the vocabulary in this briefing: coffee chat, HireVue, superday, return offer.
A high-school summerGet in the room
  • Practice the work itself: structure a messy problem, reach a recommendation and defend it under questions. That is what superdays and case interviews ask.
  • Spend a week on real business cases: The Boardroom, Boston, July 2027.
  • Come home with a specific, first-hand answer to “why business?”
Grade 12Map the path
  • Know which clubs and first-year programs exist at each college, and when they open.
  • If accounting is a possibility, learn the four- and five-year CPA paths; the choice moves the recruiting year.90
College, year 1Start well
  • Apply to clubs, expect rejection and apply again; the Journal’s Penn student got in on the third try.1
  • Protect first-year grades: a January sophomore application rests on three semesters at most, and summer-2027 bank postings asked for 3.4 to 3.6.8,9,31
  • Look for first-year programs; some take applications as early as October (Exhibit 11).
College, year 2Recruit
  • Fall: Big 4 accounting and boutique banks; sophomore programs at banks, consulting firms and trading firms.
  • Winter and spring: big-bank applications and the first MBB deadlines.
Summer after year 2, and year 3Keep the later doors in view
  • Quant trading and Big Tech open in July; brands, corporate finance, most other consulting and Boston’s fund managers recruit in junior fall.
  • In 2026, Bain held an August 31 internship round for juniors and an October 11 round for seniors.80

Section 5.2What not to do

Honesty

Don’t fudge class year

It is dishonest, and the process is built around it: employers place students by how many summers they have left before graduating.

Employers consider class level by “the number of summers you have left.”19
Major

Don’t choose a major to fit a calendar

At Dartmouth, banking and consulting recruiting begins before many students can even declare a major. The major and the career do not have to match.

“I tell students you do not need to bridge your major to your career,” says Dartmouth’s Joe Catrino.143
Timing

Don’t read one missed window as the end

Each field runs its own calendar. A student who misses the January banking window still has fund managers, brands and most consulting firms in the fall.

Nearly three-quarters of internship recruiting still happens in the fall, by our arithmetic from NACE data.106
Clubs

Don’t treat a club rejection as a verdict

Acceptance rates at selective clubs are often in single digits, and some of the people who now run them were rejected the first time.

“Student success is independent of participation in any single club,” a Ross dean said.118

Section 5.3Where The Boardroom fits

The Boardroom, which publishes this report, runs a five-day summer business program in Boston for high-school students aged 14 to 18. Its week follows the path of a real business decision: the market, the financial statements, the valuation, the deal, and a recommendation presented to a board of working executives.144

In our view, those are the skills early interviews probe, practiced before the clock starts. The week does not replace college clubs, practice or internships. It aims to give students the foundation those stages assume, at an age when there is still time to build on it.

Methodology & Sources

About this briefing

Research for this briefing was done on October 8, 2026. We read employer job postings, live or archived on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine; university career-office calendars and employer policies; NACE reports; firm statements; and press coverage. Every figure comes from a named public source, and quotations are reproduced as published. Four separate fact-checking passes compared each claim with its source before publication.

A posting date is when a posting first appeared on the firm’s job board or in an archived copy, so the real opening may be slightly earlier. Rolling windows close when seats fill. Lead times are our arithmetic to a June 1 start. Summer-2028 dates for the large banks and the top consulting firms, and every date in Exhibit 14, are our projections from the 2026 calendar. Three details rest on the Wall Street Journal alone: students holding summer-2027 quant offers, scouting at poker tournaments, and students misstating their class year. Several banking, private-equity and consulting facts were first verified for our earlier briefings.145

The Boardroom is an independent education program. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any firm, university or other organization named in this briefing; names are used only to describe the public landscape of on-campus employment recruiting. The preparation sequence in Section 5.1 is general guidance, and every student’s path will differ.
